The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is a licensure examination conducted in India for Indian citizens or Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) who have obtained their medical degrees from foreign countries. Administered by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), the FMGE assesses the knowledge and understanding of basic medical concepts and clinical practices of candidates aspiring to practice medicine in India.
The FMGE is held twice a year, typically in June and December. The exam adheres to the syllabus prescribed by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and covers various disciplines such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine, Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, and more.
Conducted in English, the FMGE consists of a single paper comprising 300 multiple-choice questions (MCQs). These questions are based on the concepts and principles taught during the undergraduate medical curriculum. Candidates have three and a half hours to complete the exam.
To pass the FMGE, candidates must secure a minimum of 150 marks out of 300. The NBE declares the results, and successful candidates receive a pass certificate. This certificate enables them to apply for provisional or permanent registration with the State Medical Council (SMC) or Medical Council of India (MCI) to practice medicine in India.
