Pharmacology syllabus in China

  • Pharmacology is a subject that studies principles of interactions between medicines
    and organisms (including pathogens).
  • The subject includes pharmacodynamics which is the study of how medicines produce their effects on organisms and pharmacokinetics which is the study of how medicines undergo biotransformation in the body.

Course Description:

  • Pharmacology is based on physiology, biochemistry, pathology and pathogenic organisms. These studies lay a solid foundation for clinical courses.
  • The objectives of pharmacology are to elucidate the mechanism of actions of medicines, disease prevention, metabolic process, adverse reactions, routes of administration and compatibility.
  • Therefore pharmacology is an essential course in the clinical medical curriculum.

Teaching methods

  • Pharmacology teaching should be performed with the purpose of making the students grasp the rational uses of drugs.
  1. General pharmacology and systemic pharmacology
    • Lectures: Teach students related knowledge and information to the largest extent by multimedia
    • Discussion: Organize the students to discuss the questions associated with clinical knowledge and rational uses of medicines
    • Seminars: Seminars on some important topics will be planned, in which experts in corresponding fields are invited to discuss with the students
    • Self-teaching: Teach students interesting knowledge by themselves under the instruction of teachers, and write reports
    • PBL: Offer the questions to the students, let them refer to related materials and write reports, and then discuss with them
  1. Practice
    • Experiment operation: the experiments contain verification experiments, designable experiments and comprehensive experiments. The whole class will be divided into 4-6 groups according to different experiments.
      1. Verification experiments: Do the experiments as the procedures
      2. Designable experiments: Offer animals, drugs and purposes to the students, and let them design the whole experiments
      3. Comprehensive experiments: Establish disease models, and chooses the drugs to treat them
    • Experiment reports: Write the experiment reports, and analyze the final results

Teaching hours distribution

  • Total numbers of teaching hours are approximately 108 (one semester)
