Microbiology syllabus in China

  • Medical microbiology is a science of studying a variety of pathogens including
opportunistic pathogens, the diseases they cause, diagnostic measures, and principles
of prevention and treatment of infectious diseases.
  • The purpose of the Medical Microbiology course is to familiarize the students with those concepts and features of pathogenic microorganisms.

Course Description:

  • The course is divided into three thematic areas: Bacteriology, Mycology, and Virology. The general course is presented in the form of lecture, lab practice, and discussions. Lectures are the foundation of the course.
  • Laboratory practices are designed to focus on the basic laboratory techniques
necessary for the diagnosis of infectious disease (culture, staining, and laboratory
testing for the identification of infectious organisms and evaluation of host immune
    parameters).
  • Discussions focus on the key points of the lectures and exam tutorial.
  • The students are encouraged to examine related materials that are available, such as
scientific journals, newspapers, magazines and television programs that relate to
course topics, and bring them to the discussion class.
  • Microbiology class is scheduled two times each week. There are 3-4 classes each time, with a break per 50 minutes.

Teaching methods

  1. Classroom lectures
    • Teachers apply various teaching methods such as case analysis, problem-based learning, heuristics teaching, contrasting teaching to facilitate students to learn terminology, principles, and concepts of microbiology.
    • Student self-directed learning is needed in the chapter of Introduction to medical microbiology, Actinomyces and Nocardia, Corynebacterium, and Prion.
      • Faculties will first provide the emphasis of the chapters and key questions. Students could focus on them and give their answers.
      • The answers should be handed in and evaluated.
    • Slides and video films will be applied to selected topics.
  1. Lab experiments
    • Basic experiments and student-designed experiments
    • In some experiments, the protocols will be designed by students under teachers’ supervision.
      • Students verify and clarify theoretical concepts through experimental results and develop their skills of basic microbiological detection important in clinical diagnosis.
    • Experimental demonstrations and individual experiment
    • Students visit the electron microscopy lab.
  1. Seminars on the topics microecology and nosocomial infection, Bacterial drug resistance will be held. Students in small groups search for related information regarding the topic, write review articles or book reports, and give their presentations in the seminar.
  2. Students are encouraged to take part in the research group of teachers to get early experience in microbiological research.
